Method BB4mE

Burov’s Bridge for EBITDA margin

BB4mE is a management method for analyzing EBITDA margin. It allows, in monetary terms, to assess which factors and by what amount have driven changes in business margin compared to the same period of the previous year or to the budget.

In monetary terms, BB4mE shows the amount of costs that caused the EBITDA margin of the current period to deviate from the level of the prior year or budget benchmarks.

Why BB4mE is needed

In real businesses, EBITDA margin is not uniform. Different business segments have different margin levels, and within each segment individual contracts also differ in economics and profitability.

As a result, changes in business structure — the share of segments and contracts in total revenue — by themselves affect overall EBITDA margin, even if contract execution conditions remain unchanged.

BB4mE makes it possible to account for this effect and separate structural changes from changes related to the actual performance of individual contracts.

What BB4mE shows

  • which part of the EBITDA margin change was driven by structural shifts;
  • which part was driven by changes in the contract portfolio structure within segments;
  • where disproportionate margin deviations arise at the level of specific contracts.

Results are expressed in monetary terms, making them directly applicable for management, planning, and control.

How the results are used

BB4mE is applied in actual vs. budget analysis, interim management reporting, and discussions at the level of the Management Board and top executives.

Based on BB4mE amounts, decisions are made on development or limitation of specific business segments, reprioritization of the contract portfolio, assessment of management quality, and the need for management or control actions.

In many cases, this level of analysis is sufficient for strategic decision-making.

Further detailing when needed

If deeper analysis of specific contracts is required, APG may be applied — selectively and only to those contracts identified by BB4mE as requiring additional review.

Who the method is for

BB4mE is designed for the Management Board, CFOs and finance leaders, heads of business segments, and management accounting and planning teams.
